dormant stages

A butterfly, in all of its various life stages, lives for approximately six weeks.  The chrysalis stage, which may become a dormant period for the pupa, lasts about ten days.   This means almost a quarter of a butterfly's life may be spent in dormancy, with all growth and movement temporarily stopped, before the emergence into its final, and many would agree most beautiful and visually memorable, stage of life.
